Seating Choice in a Library Tells A Lot About a Person

Picture2 Ask a dozen students about their favorite study spot in the Tunxis Library, and you’re likely to get a dozen different answers.  Where you study depends on what you want to get done.  Some people need to meet in a study room with their group for a project, others need complete quiet, some have to hide out from their families,  researchers need the online environment, … and then there are those who just love a comfy chair and a quiet, cozy library.

Here’s some “Quietness Ratings” for the Tunxis Library study areas (rated 1-5)
1= super quiet       5=noisy

1st Floor tables: 4-5
1st Floor soft seating: 4-5
1st Floor study carrels: 2-3
1st Floor computer area: 2-3
1st Floor group study rooms: 5

<Shhh! Quiet zone on 2nd Floor>

2nd Floor tables: 2-3
2nd Floor soft seating: 1-2
2nd floor study carrels: 1
2nd floor computer area: 1-2
2nd floor group study rooms: 5

Why No Food or Disposable Drink Cups in the Library?

What’s Up with That???

Believe us, we’d love to let you order a pizza, munch on potato chips, and swig a coke in the Library, but the fact is:

  • Food smells bad
  • Even nice people are messy
  • Food crumbs and wrappers attract mice and insects
  • People lick their fingers and then use the computer keyboards
  • Disposable cups are either not disposed of properly—or are tossed half-full into the trash receptacles leaving sticky spatters on tables and down the front of the trash containers.

We know this because we lived it in the “former Library.”
That’s why we had Pages Café designed just for you right outside the Library!

We’re keeping the new buildings clean.

  • If you need to eat while you work, set yourself up in the lobby of Pages Café. You can eat and drink there, and it can be pretty quiet most times.
  • If you connect drinking coffee or tea to studying, buy the $2  Tunxis Library spill-proof mug and make yourself at home anywhere in the Library.

Thank you!

The question asked is “Do we need dictionaries in the age of Google?” I say yes, but then again, I’m the type of person who reads dictionaries for fun!

The 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States became effective on this date in 192o, guaranteeing women the right to vote all across the country.  In honor of that fact I give you these women offering their interpretations of the classic “We Can Do It” women’s empowerment poster. Check out the littlest woman’s inborn sense of female strength!

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Another book to movie adaptation is in theaters this summer.  The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger stars Rachel McAdams as Claire  and Eric Bana as Henry, the couple both united and torn apart by the vagaries of Henry’s genetic propensity for appearing and disappearing throughout their lives together, past, present and future.
The trailer makes the movie look sumptuously romantic.  As always, read the book first!

Julie Powell’s gamble of blogging her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking has certainly paid off, with her memoir now the impetus for the new movie, Julie and Julia. And who wouldn’t want to be portrayed by the cute Amy Adams?

Get the book at the Tunxis Library!  Check availability now.

One thing I will say for the NPR crowd… they’re a brainy bunch!  So when NPR listeners were asked to name the 100 Best Beach Books Ever they rose to the occasion with some new and old favorites of the decidedly non-trashy variety.  Good news is, we have most of these titles here at the Tunxis Library.  And, we don’t even mind a little sand when you bring them back.
